          SUBJECT:  Bakersfield Police Officer David J. Nelson Memorial  
          Bridge.


          SUMMARY:  Designates the Hosking Road interchange over State  
          Route (SR) 99 in the City of Bakersfield as the "Bakersfield  
          Police Officer David J. Nelson Memorial Bridge."  Specifically,  
          this resolution:  


          1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of David J. Nelson, an  
            officer of the Bakersfield Police Department.


          2)Designates the Hosking Road interchange over SR 99 in the City  
            of Bakersfield as the "Bakersfield Police Officer David J.  
            Nelson Memorial Bridge."


          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent  
            with the signing requirements for the state highway system,  
            showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations  
            from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those  
            signs.

          EXISTING LAW:  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways.  This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.


          FISCAL EFFECT:  Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans  
          only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from  
          non-state sources covering the cost.


          COMMENTS:  Officer David J. Nelson graduated from the Kern  
          County Law Enforcement Training Academy in June 2013 and was  
          chosen as a defensive tactics instructor for the Bakersfield  
          Police Department selected to mentor and train police officer  
          trainees.  On June 26, 2015, Officer Nelson gave chase to an  
          armed and dangerous suspect likely planning to harm a citizen of  
          Bakersfield and was killed in a vehicle accident.  This  
          resolution designating a portion of SR 99 in his honor  
          acknowledges the significant contributions Officer Nelson made  
          to his community.
