ACR 121, as introduced, Gomez. Deputy Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange.
This measure would designate the interchange at State Highway Route 60 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Deputy Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost,to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Thomas H. Pohlman was a sheriff’s deputy with 
2the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; and
3WHEREAS, Deputy Pohlman was born on July 8, 1950, and 
4was appointed as a sheriff’s deputy on May 29, 1973; and
5WHEREAS, On April 19, 1978, Deputy Pohlman was on patrol 
6when he smelled ether, used in the manufacture of the drug PCP, 
7coming from a nearby house. As Deputy Pohlman and his partner 
8approached the house, a man bolted from the home. Deputy 
9Pohlman pursued the suspect on foot, while his partner went back 
10to the squad car to radio for assistance. Deputy Pohlman caught 
11the suspect, and, while the suspect was being handcuffed, the 
P2    1suspect gained control of Deputy Pohlman’s revolver and shot 
2him. Deputy Pohlman died at the scene; and
3WHEREAS, Deputy Pohlman honorably served with the 
4department and bravely gave his life in the service of his 
5community; and
6WHEREAS, In recognition of Deputy Pohlman’s commitment 
7and sacrifice while serving and protecting the residents of the 
8County of Los Angeles, it is a fitting tribute to designate the 
9interchange at State Highway Route 60 and Interstate 710 in the 
10County of Los Angeles as the Deputy Thomas H. Pohlman 
11Memorial Interchange; now, therefore, be it
12Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate 
13thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the 
14interchange at State Highway Route 60 and Interstate 710 in the 
15County of Los Angeles as the Deputy Thomas H. Pohlman 
16Memorial Interchange; and be it further
17Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested 
18to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the 
19signing requirements for the state highway system showing this 
20special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate 
21sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it 
22further
23Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies 
24of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author 
25for appropriate distribution.
