Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 121—Relative to the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange.

ACR 121, as amended, Gomez. Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange.

This measure would designate the interchange atbegin delete State Highway Routeend deletebegin insert Interstateend insert 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect those signs.

P2    1WHEREAS, Thomas H. Pohlman was a sheriff’s deputy with
2the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; and

3WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was born on July 8, 1950,
4and was appointed as a sheriff’s deputy on May 29, 1973; and

5WHEREAS, On April 19, 1978, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was
6on patrol when he smelled ether, used in the manufacture of the
7drug PCP, coming from a nearby house. As Deputy Sheriff
8Pohlman and his partner approached the house, a man bolted from
9the home. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman pursued the suspect on foot,
10while his partner went back to the squad car to radio for assistance.
11Deputy Sheriff Pohlman caught the suspect, and, while the suspect
12was being handcuffed, the suspect gained control of Deputy Sheriff
13Pohlman’s revolver and shot him. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman died
14at the scene; and

15WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman honorably served with
16the department and bravely gave his life in the service of his
17community; and

18WHEREAS, In recognition of Deputy Sheriff Pohlman’s
19commitment and sacrifice while serving and protecting the
20residents of the County of Los Angeles, it is a fitting tribute to
21designate the interchange atbegin delete State Highway Routeend deletebegin insert Interstateend insert 10
22and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles
23County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange;
24now, therefore, be it

25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
26thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
27interchange atbegin delete State Highway Routeend deletebegin insert Interstateend insert 10 and Interstate
28710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County
29Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange; and
30be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
2to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
3signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
4special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
5sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
6further

7Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
8of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
9for appropriate distribution.
