BILL ANALYSIS Ó ACR 121 Page 1 Date of Hearing: March 14, 2016 ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION Jim Frazier, Chair ACR 121 (Gomez) - As Amended March 8, 2016 SUBJECT: Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange SUMMARY: Designates the interchange of State Highway Route (SR) 60 and Interstate 710 (I-710) in Los Angeles County as the "Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange." Specifically, this resolution: 1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Thomas H. Pohlman, a sheriff's deputy in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. 2)Designates the interchange of SR 60 and I-710 in Los Angeles County as the "Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange." 3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those ACR 121 Page 2 signs. EXISTING LAW: Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating and maintaining state highways including the installation and maintenance of highway signs. FISCAL EFFECT: Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from non-state sources covering the cost. COMMENTS: Thomas H. Pohlman was appointed as a sheriff's deputy in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 1973 and served for nearly five years. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was killed in the line of duty on April 19, 1978, at the age of 27, while pursuing and detaining a suspect. This resolution designating the interchange at SR 60 and I-710 in his honor acknowledges the significant role Deputy Sheriff Pohlman played in his community.
