ACR 123, as introduced, Steinorth. Sheriff’s Deputies Ronald Wayne Ives and Daniel Jess Lobo, Jr., Memorial Highway.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 15 in the County of San Bernardino as the Sheriff’s Deputies Ronald Wayne Ives and Daniel Jess Lobo, Jr., Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, Ronald Wayne Ives was born in Norwalk,
2California, in 1961. He grew up in the Cities of Buena Park and
3Lakewood, and graduated from Chaffey High School in the City
4of Ontario, California; and
5WHEREAS, Ronald Wayne Ives became a deputy sheriff for
6the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on January 2,
71996, after graduating from the Sheriff’s Training Academy.
8Deputy Sheriff Ives was originally assigned to the West Valley
P2 1Detention Center before being promoted and assigned to Patrol at
2the Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff’s Station in 1999; and
3WHEREAS, In 2002, Deputy Sheriff Ives rode his bicycle from
4the City of Rancho Cucamonga to New York City. The ride raised
5money for the survivors of public safety personnel who died in
6the September 11, 2001, attacks. The Rancho Cucamonga Police
7Department honors this act annually during the “Ron Ives Bicycle
8Rodeo”; and
9WHEREAS, On September 1, 2004, Deputy Sheriff Ives was
10killed while on patrol in the Rancho Cucamonga area when an
11SUV ran a red light and struck his motorcycle at approximately
1250 miles per hour; and
13WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Ives was transported to Arrowhead
14Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries
15approximately one hour later; and
16WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Ives served with the San
17Bernanrdino County Sheriff’s Department for eight years. He was
18survived by his wife, Karen, and his son, Blake; and
19WHEREAS, Daniel Jess Lobo, Jr., was born in Pomona,
20California, in 1970. He grew up in the Cities of Pomona and
21Montclair, and graduated from Montclair High School; and
22WHEREAS, Daniel Jess Lobo, Jr., became a deputy sheriff for
23the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on July 4, 1994,
24after graduating from the Sheriff’s Training Academy. He was
25originally assigned to the West Valley Detention Center before
26being promoted and assigned to Patrol at the Rancho Cucamonga
27Sheriff’s Station in 1998; and
28WHEREAS, On October 11, 2005, Deputy Sheriff Lobo was
29killed in a vehicle accident with his motorcycle while responding
30to the scene of another crash in the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
31Deputy Sheriff Lobo was traveling behind another motor officer
32and a squad car when a vehicle pulled out of a parking lot into
33their path. All of the responding units had their emergency
34equipment activated; and
35WHEREAS, The other motor officer and the squad car were
36able to swerve out of the car’s path, but Deputy Sheriff Lobo’s
37motorcycle struck the rear of the car. He was thrown approximately
3850 feet as the result of the impact. He was flown to Arrowhead
39Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries
40approximately one hour later; and
P3 1WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Lobo served with the San
2Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for 11 years and was
3survived by his wife, Jennifer, and his three daughters, Kiley,
4Kadie, and Maddison; now, therefore, be it
5Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
6thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates that
7portion of State Highway Route 15 from its junction with State
8Highway Route 210 to Sierra Avenue in the County of San
9Bernardino, California, as the Sheriff’s Deputies Ronald Wayne
10Ives and Daniel Jess Lobo, Jr., Memorial Highway; and be it further
11Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
12to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
13signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
14special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
15sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
16further
17Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
18of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
19for appropriate distribution.
