          SUBJECT:  Larry Chimbole Memorial Highway


          SUMMARY:  Designates a portion of State Route (SR) 138 in Los  
          Angeles County between the SR 138 and SR 14 Interchange and 47th  
          Street East in the City of Palmdale as the Larry Chimbole  
          Memorial Highway.  Specifically, this resolution:  


          1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Lawrence "Larry"  
            Chimbole.


          2)Designates a portion of SR 138 between the SR 138 and SR 14  
            Interchange and 47th Street East in the City of Palmdale as  
            the Larry Chimbole Memorial Highway with the posted signs  
            reading "Larry Chimbole Memorial Highway:  First Mayor of  
            Palmdale."


          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent  
            with the signing requirements for the state highway system,  
            showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations  
            from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those  
            signs.

          EXISTING LAW:  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways including the installation and  
          maintenance of highway signs.


          FISCAL EFFECT:  Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans  
          only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from  
          non-state sources covering the cost.


          COMMENTS:  Lawrence "Larry" Chimbole was born in New Haven,  
          Connecticut, on May 22, 1919, and graduated from Stamford High  
          School in 1937.  After serving in World War II, Mr. Chimbole  
          moved to California.  He ultimately settled in the City of  
          Palmdale where he opened a hardware store.  Mr. Chimbole became  
          active in community politics and was instrumental in leading the  
          City of Palmdale into incorporation, after which, he was elected  
          the city's first mayor in 1962.  


          Mr. Chimbole went on to serve two terms in the California State  
          Assembly from 1974 to 1978.  After his tenure in the  
          Legislature, he remained active in his community, serving on a  
          number of state boards and associations.  Mr. Chimbole passed  
          away on November 10, 2015, at the age of 96.  He is predeceased  
          by his wife Vicki and is survived by his children, Stephen  
          Chimbole and Patricia Bollman, as well as numerous grandchildren  
          and great-grandchildren.  This resolution designating the  
          portion of SR 138 between the SR 138 and SR 14 Interchange and  
          47th Street East in the City of Palmdale as the Larry Chimbole  
          Memorial Highway acknowledges the significant role Larry  
          Chimbole played in his community.
