Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 142—Relative to the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. Memorial Highway.

ACR 142, as introduced, Williams. Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. Memorial Highway.

This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 33 in the County of Ventura as the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. was a devoted
2husband to his wife Dina and father to his two-year-old daughter,
3Gabi; and

4WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. studied for six
5years in college and planned to become a schoolteacher, but shortly
6before his death, switched to law enforcement studies; and

7WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. served with the
8Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for two years and ten
9months; and

P2    1WHEREAS, On July 17, 1996, when Deputy Sheriff Peter
2Aguirre, Jr. was 26 years old, he responded to a domestic violence
3call at a home in the Ojai Valley community of Meiners Oaks in
4Ventura County. As Peter was approaching the home, he was
5ambushed and shot, and died as a result of the injury; and

6WHEREAS, As a peace officer, Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre,
7Jr. gave his life to the citizens of Ventura County and the great
8State of California; now, therefore, be it

9Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
10thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
11portion of State Highway Route 33 in the County of Ventura from
12West Ojai Avenue at post mile 11.21 to Fairview Road at post
13mile 12.8 as the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr.
14Memorial Highway; and be it further

15Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
16to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
17signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
18special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
19sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
20further

21Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
22of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
23for appropriate distribution.
