This measure would recognize the month of March 2016 as National Nutrition Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, CalFresh is a federally mandated, state-supervised,
2and county-operated government program designed to eliminate
3hunger in the United States that serves over four million
4Californians living in poverty, providing them an important lifeline
5by giving them access to food to feed themselves and their families;
6and
7WHEREAS, It is important to California’s economy to fully
8use every possible source of funding for its safety net programs;
9and
10WHEREAS, Federal benefit dollars such as those brought in by
11CalFresh not only provide critical nutrition assistance to our state’s
12neediest residents, but they directly benefit local economies and
13jobs; and
14WHEREAS, According to the United States Department of
15Agriculture, every $1 of additional federal Supplemental Nutrition
P2 1Assistance Program benefits results in $1.79 of new local economic
2activity; and
3WHEREAS, All potentially eligible families in California need
4to be aware and use nutrition programs to help stay healthy and
5stretch food dollars during these difficult economic times; and
6WHEREAS, CalFresh benefits help families stretch their food
7dollars to buy more healthy foods for the whole family; and
8WHEREAS, California grocers are on the front-lines of
9providing healthy foods to these communities on a daily basis; and
10WHEREAS, California grocers have remained committed to
11the effort of CalFresh along with raising the awareness of the
12program within the communities they serve; and
13WHEREAS, It is important for grocery stores to promote
14wellness by providing consumers with fresh quality products every
15day because they understand that communities who eat healthy
16are less likely to have to go to the doctor due to preventable
17conditions; and
18WHEREAS, The partnership between Calfresh and California
19grocers remains as strong as ever, particularly in these times of
20need; and
21WHEREAS, The month of March is National Nutrition Month,
22and should serve as an opportunity to recognize that no one diet
23is right for everyone, but it is important to maintain wholesome
24food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle; now, therefore be it
25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
26thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the importance
27and value of the CalFresh program in conjunction with California
28grocers in feeding families and promoting healthy eating; and be
29it further
30Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes the month of March
312016 as National Nutrition Month, and encourages all Californians
32to join the campaign and become concerned about their nutrition
33and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving optimum health
34for both today and tomorrow; and be it further
35Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
36of the resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
