This measure would recognize the month of March 2016 as National Nutrition Month.

P1 1WHEREAS, CalFresh is a federally mandated, state-supervised,
2and county-operated government program designed to eliminate
3hunger in the United States that serves over four million
4Californians living in poverty, providing them an important lifeline
P1 1by giving them access to food to feed themselves and their families;
2and
3WHEREAS, It is important to California’s economy to fully
4use every possible source of funding for its safety net programs;
5and
6WHEREAS, Federal benefit dollars such as those brought in by
7CalFresh not only provide critical nutrition assistance to our state’s
8neediest residents, but they directly benefit local economies and
9jobs; and
10WHEREAS, According to the United States Department of
11Agriculture, every $1 of additional federal Supplemental Nutrition
12Assistance Program benefits results in $1.79 of new local economic
13activity; and
14WHEREAS, All potentially eligible families in California need
15to be aware and use nutrition programs to help stay healthy and
16stretch food dollars during these difficult economic times; and
17WHEREAS, CalFresh benefits help families stretch their food
18dollars to buy more healthy foods for the whole family; and
19WHEREAS, California grocers are on the front-lines of
20providing healthy foods to these communities on a daily basis; and
21WHEREAS, California grocers have remained committed to
22the effort of CalFresh along with raising the awareness of the
23program within the communities they serve; and
24WHEREAS, It is important for grocery stores to promote
25wellness by providing consumers with fresh quality products every
26day because they understand that communities who eat healthy
27are less likely to have to go to the doctor due to preventable
28conditions; and
29WHEREAS, The partnership between Calfresh and California
30grocers remains as strong as ever, particularly in these times of
31need; and
32WHEREAS, The month of March is National Nutrition Month,
33and should serve as an opportunity to recognize that no one diet
34is right for everyone, but it is important to maintain wholesome
35food choices as part of a healthy lifestyle; now, therefore be it
36Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
37thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes the importance
38and value of the CalFresh program in conjunction with California
39grocers in feeding families and promoting healthy eating; and be
40it further
P3 1Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes the month of March
22016 as National Nutrition Month, and encourages all Californians
3to join the campaign and become concerned about their nutrition
4and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving optimum health
5for both today and tomorrow; and be it further
6Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
7of the resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
