Louis Silvie Zamperini was born on January 26, 1917, in New
York, moving to Torrance, California, in 1919. Louis Zamperini
set the national high school record in the mile at the Los
Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1934. Two years later, Mr.
Zamperini finished in a tie in the 5,000-meter Olympic trials,
qualifying him for the 1936 Olympics. In 1938, he set a
national collegiate mile record. When World War II broke out,
he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and became a bombardier.
During a search-and-rescue mission, Mr. Zamperini's airplane
crashed due to a mechanical failure. He was stranded on a raft
for 47 days before washing ashore and becoming a prisoner of
war. He was tortured for the next two years and was released
and returned to the U.S. in 1945. After the war, he founded a
camp for troubled youths call the Victory Boys Camp. On July 2,
2014, Louis Silvie Zamperini passed away at his home in Los
Angeles, California, at 97 years of age. His dramatic life
story has been told in various books and movies.
Louis Zamperini is survived by his son, daughter, and a
grandchild.
