SUBJECT: CHP Officer Keith M. Giles Memorial Interchange

DIGEST: This resolution designates the interchange at State
Routes 43 and 198 in the County of Kings as the CHP Officer
Keith M. Giles Memorial Interchange.
ANALYSIS: This resolution designates the interchange at State
Routes 43 and 198 in the County of Kings as the CHP Officer
Keith M. Giles Memorial Interchange. It also requests the
Department of Transportation to determine the cost of
appropriate signage and, upon receipt of donations from
non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.
Comments
1)Purpose. This resolution is intended to honor the life and
service of Keith M. Giles.

2)Background. Keith Melvin Giles was born on July 21, 1940, in
Tulare, California. He graduated from Corcoran High School
and the College of the Sequoias. Mr. Giles served in the U.S.
Army, achieving the rank of corporal. Mr. Giles graduated
from the California Highway Patrol Academy on May 28, 1970.
Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Santa Fe Springs area.
On August 25, 1974, Officer Giles was killed in the line of
duty. While making a traffic stop and standing next to the
stopped vehicle, another vehicle drifted over the edge of the
roadway, striking and killing Officer Giles. Officer Giles is
survived by his wife and three children.
