This measure would proclaim the week of May 15, 2016, to May 21, 2016, as Emergency Medical Services Week.

P1 1WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are over 840,000
2emergency medical services personnel in the United States,
3including over 80,000 in the State of California; and
4WHEREAS, Emergency medical services are a vital public
5service and the members of emergency medical services teams are
6ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day,
7seven days a week; and
8WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system consists
9of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical
10technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators,
11and others; and
12WHEREAS, The members of emergency medical services teams,
13whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of
14specialized training and continuing education to enhance their
15lifesaving skills; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Emergency medical services providers are
2dedicated to saving lives and possess a sense of duty to aid others
3that is inherent in the profession and stays with an emergency
4medical services provider for life; and
5WHEREAS, Approximately 25 to 30 million patients nationwide
6and over two million patients throughout California receive
7emergency medical services each year; and
8WHEREAS, Access to quality emergency medical care
9dramatically improves the survival and recovery rates of those
10who experience sudden illness or injury; and
11WHEREAS, The American College of Emergency Physicians
12was instrumental in establishing National Emergency Medical
13Services Week to honor the lifesaving efforts of emergency medical
14services personnel; and
15WHEREAS, President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first
16Emergency Medical Services Week in November of 1974; and
17WHEREAS, This is the 42nd anniversary of National Emergency
18Medical Services Week; and
19WHEREAS, The theme of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
20Week is “Called to Care”; and
21WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the value and
22accomplishments of emergency medical services personnel by
23designating Emergency Medical Services Week in California;
24now, therefore, be it
25Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
26thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims the week of
27May 15, 2016, to May 21, 2016, as Emergency Medical Services
28Week in California; and be it further
29Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
30of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
