Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 171—Relative to emergency medical services.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 171, as amended, Rodriguez. Emergency Medical Services Week.

This measure would proclaim the week of May 15, 2016, to May 21, 2016, as Emergency Medical Services Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are over 840,000
2emergency medical services personnel in the United States,
3including over 80,000 in the State of California; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Emergency medical services are a vital public
2service and the members of emergency medical services teams are
3ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day,
4seven days a week; and

5WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system consists
6of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical
7technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, administrators,
8and others; and

9WHEREAS, The members of emergency medical services teams,
10whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of
11specialized training and continuing education to enhance their
12lifesaving skills; and

13WHEREAS, Emergency medical services providers are
14dedicated to saving lives and possess a sense of duty to aid others
15that is inherent in the profession and stays with an emergency
16medical services provider for life; and

17WHEREAS, Approximately 25 to 30 million patients nationwide
18and over two million patients throughout California receive
19emergency medical services each year; and

20WHEREAS, Access to quality emergency medical care
21dramatically improves the survival and recovery rates of those
22who experience sudden illness or injury; and

23WHEREAS, The American College of Emergency Physicians
24was instrumental in establishing National Emergency Medical
25Services Week to honor the lifesaving efforts of emergency medical
26services personnel; and

27WHEREAS, President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first
28Emergency Medical Services Week in November of 1974; and

29WHEREAS, This is the 42nd anniversary of National Emergency
30Medical Services Week; and

31WHEREAS, The theme of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
32Week is “Called to Care”; and

33WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize the value and
34accomplishments of emergency medical services personnel by
35designating Emergency Medical Services Week in California;
36now, therefore, be it

37Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
38thereof concurring,
That the Legislature proclaims the week of
39May 15, 2016, to May 21, 2016, as Emergency Medical Services
40Week in California; and be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
2of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
