P1    1WHEREAS, The year 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the
2Girl Scouts of America’s Gold Award, the highest honor presented
3by the organization to its most exceptional scouts, and in
4recognition thereof it is appropriate to underscore the positive
5impact of this valued tradition and commend the efforts of the
6countless women who include themselves among the ever-growing
7community of Gold Award recipients; and

8WHEREAS, Established in 1912--a time when women in the
9United States could not yet vote--as a single troop of 18 girls in
10Savannah, Georgia, Girls Scouts of America was conceived by
11Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low, who envisioned an organization that

2and character. Providing girls and young women the opportunity

6countries and more than 59 million alumnae; and

7WHEREAS, A prestigious award that requires a true
8commitment to Girl Scouts and the completion of a
9community-oriented project that requires one to two years of effort,
10the Gold Award and its preceding equivalents have been awarded
11to more than one million girls since its inception in 1916.
12Recipients entering military service and university studies are
13presented greater opportunities and often distinguish themselves
14among their peers as clear leaders and role models; and

15WHEREAS, The Gold Award originated as the Gold Eaglet
16insignia, which was used from 1916 to 1939, and as the
17organization evolved over the years so too did the honor.
18Exemplary scouts earned the Curved Bar Award from 1940 to
191963, the First Class Award from 1963 to 1980, and, from 1980
20to the present, the Gold Award, inspiring their peers to find
21greatness inside themselves and share their ideas and passions with
22their communities; and

23WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of America allows young girls to
24establish strong bonds of friendship and obtain a sense of “family”
25from within the group, and these girls go on to gain experiences
26and knowledge that may not otherwise be available to them; now,
27therefore, be it
