This measure would designate abegin insert specifiedend insert portion ofbegin delete State Highway Route 18 orend delete State Highway Route 247 in the County of San Bernardino as the Sergeant Brian Walker Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, Sergeant Brian L. Walker was born and raised in
2San Bernardino County’s high desert region; and
3WHEREAS, Sergeant Walker attended Lucerne Valley High
4School where he was an officer in the Future Farmers of America
5program; and
6WHEREAS, Sergeant Walker served as a military policeman
7in the United States Army assigned to the 425th Brigade Special
8Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th
9Infantry Division; and
P2 1WHEREAS, Six days after arriving for his second deployment
2in the Middle East, Sergeant Walker was tragically killed in
3Afghanistan on May 13, 2012, when a vehicle under his command
4was hit with an improvised explosive device, killing him and the
5driver of the vehicle, Private First Class Richard L. McNulty III;
6and
7WHEREAS, Naming a highway is but a small way to honor the
8bravery of Sergeant Walker who made the ultimate sacrifice so
9that we may enjoy the freedoms of this great nation; now, therefore,
10be it
11Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
12thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designatesbegin delete aend deletebegin insert theend insert
13 portion of State Highway Routebegin delete 18 or State Highwayend delete 247 in the
14County of San Bernardino, beginning at the intersection ofbegin delete State State Highway Route
15Highway Route 18 andend deletebegin delete 247,end deletebegin insert 247 and Allen
16Way
and continuing toward Johnson Valley for five miles,end insert as the
17Sergeant Brian Walker Memorial Highway; and be it further
18Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
19to determine the cost of erecting the appropriate signs, consistent
20with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
21showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations
22from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and
23be it further
24Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
25of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
26for appropriate distribution.
