Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 186—Relative to California Fairground Appreciation Month.

ACR 186, as introduced, Bigelow. California Fairground Appreciation Month.

This measure would designate June 2016 as California Fairground Appreciation Month and commend the directors, volunteers, staff, local agencies, nonprofits, and Californians who support and attend fairground events.

P1    1WHEREAS, California’s 76 fairgrounds represent an important
2public asset, providing public recreation, education, and community
3unity to more than 20 million Californians every year; and

4WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds provide vital emergency
5services as fire camps, disaster relief centers, and training and
6staging areas; and

7WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds accommodate both those
8actively involved in emergency relief efforts and those displaced
9by disasters and serve as a temporary home; and

10WHEREAS, More than one dozen fairgrounds served in
11emergency response capacities in 2015 alone; and

P2    1WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds serve as year-round centers
2for economic activities, generating millions of dollars in tax and
3employment income for the state and local governments; and

4WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds provide a unique and
5unparalleled platform for nonprofit events and charitable efforts
6that in turn provide a wide variety of important social services,
7including food drives, blood drives, pet adoptions, scholarships,
8and educational activities; and

9WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds promote the Golden State’s
10proud agricultural history and foster the education of future
11generations about the connection between food and farming; and

12WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds are gathering places for
13the state’s diverse ethnic populations, veterans groups, and other
14organizations; and

15WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds promote the conservation
16of natural resources, including water, and the importance of water
17to California farms and cities; and

18WHEREAS, California’s fairgrounds are supported by thousands
19of volunteers from the boardroom to the parking lot and livestock
20barns; and

21WHEREAS, The 76 fairgrounds within California deserve great
22respect and admiration for their services to California; now,
23therefore, be it

24Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
25thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
26month of June 2016 as California Fairground Appreciation Month
27in appreciation for the services given to California by the 76
28fairgrounds in the state; and be it further

29Resolved, That the Legislature commends the thousands of
30directors, volunteers, staff, local agencies, and nonprofits, as well
31as the millions of Californians, who support and attend fairground
32events year round; and be it further

33Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
34of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
