P1 1WHEREAS, Robotics is rapidly proving to be one of the most
2effective, compelling, and engaging means for teaching and
3reinforcing fundamental science, technology, engineering, and
4mathematics (STEM) concepts as well as inspiring the state’s youth
5to pursue STEM-related careers, thereby helping to create a highly
6skilled, 21st century American workforce; and
7WHEREAS, Robotics is part of the FIRST program, which
8stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and
9Technology. FIRST fosters an environment set on STEM-based
10careers. The mission of FIRST is to inspire young people to be
11science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting
12mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and
13technology skills that inspire innovation and foster well-rounded
14life capabilities, including self-confidence, communication, and
15leadership; and
P2 1WHEREAS, The emerging market for service robotics in various
2sectors, includingbegin delete healthcare,end deletebegin insert health care,end insert national defense,
3homeland security, energy, manufacturing, logistics, transportation,
4agriculture, education, consumer goods, and others, is expected to
5grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20 percent over
6the next few years to become a worldwide $27 billion industry;
7and
8WHEREAS, Robotics technology holds tremendous potential
9for reducing the cost ofbegin delete healthcareend deletebegin insert health careend insert delivery; stimulating
10the discovery and development of new procedures and treatments
11for a wide variety of diseases and disorders; improving the standard
12and accessibility of care; providing individuals with disabilities,
13especially injured veterans, with greater independence and dignity;
14and enhancing overall patient health outcomes; and
15WHEREAS, Robotics technology is proving essential to our
16national defense and homeland security by enabling the ongoing
17development and fielding of unmanned air, ground, and maritime
18systems that today help keep our nation’s war fighters and
19protectors out of harm’s way and, in the long run, will serve as a
20highly effective force multiplier; and
21WHEREAS, Robotics is a key transformative technology that
22can revolutionize American manufacturing by enabling small- and
23mid-sized companies to cost-effectively combine highly skilled
24workers and highly adaptable, precise, and reliable equipment to
25create and make high-value products in high-stakes industries; and
26WHEREAS, There is a strong need to recognize America’s
27leadership in robotics technology; educate the public on robotics
28technology’s broad potential, growing importance, and future
29impact on American society; underscore the need for increased
30investment in robotics technology research and development; and
31inspire the nation’s youth to pursue careers in robotics and other
32STEM-related fields; now, therefore, be it
33Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
34thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby declares June 27,
352016, asbegin delete Robotend deletebegin insert Robotics Technologyend insert Day; and be it further
36Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
