This measure would designate June 22, 2016, as California Nonprofits Day and recognize the importance of nonprofit organizations to the economy and well-being of this state.

P1 1WHEREAS, Nonprofit organizations are a large and vital part
2of California’s economy, with nonprofit economic activity
3contributing 15 percent, or one-sixth, of California’s gross state
4product; and
5WHEREAS, Nonprofit organizations rank as the fourth largest
6industry in California by employment, with nearly one million
7people employed by nonprofits, accounting for 1 in every 16
8California jobs; and
9WHEREAS, Each year nonprofit organizations bring in at least
10$40 billion in revenue to California from out-of-state sources; and
11WHEREAS, California nonprofit organizations employ greater
12percentages of women and people of color than the overall civilian
13workforce; and
14WHEREAS, California nonprofit organizations are trusted
15institutions that exist to provide services to the needy and
P2 1vulnerable, improve quality of life, express community values,
2and promote social change; and
3WHEREAS, The nonprofit organization community in California
4is a strong economic power that uses that power for the common
5good; and
6WHEREAS, California’s nonprofit organizations are national
7and international groundbreakers and leaders in the environment,
8in science, in safety net innovations, in civil rights, in the arts and
9humanities, and in the pursuit of democratic ideals; now, therefore,
10be it
11Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
12thereof concurring, That the Legislature, in recognition of the
13importance of nonprofit organizations to the economy and
14well-being of this state, declares June 22, 2016, as California
15Nonprofits Day; and be it further
16Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
17of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
