This measure would designate June 22, 2016, as California Nonprofits Day and recognize the importance of nonprofit organizations to the economy and well-being of this state.

P1 1WHEREAS, Nonprofit organizations are a large and vital part
2of California’s economy, with nonprofit economic activity
P1 1contributing 15 percent, or one-sixth, of California’s gross state
2product; and
3WHEREAS, Nonprofit organizations rank as the fourth largest
4industry in California by employment, with nearly one million
5people employed by nonprofits, accounting for 1 in every 16
6California jobs; and
7WHEREAS, Each year nonprofit organizations bring in at least
8$40 billion in revenue to California from out-of-state sources; and
9WHEREAS, California nonprofit organizations employ greater
10percentages of women and people of color than the overall civilian
11workforce; and
12WHEREAS, California nonprofit organizations are trusted
13institutions that exist to provide services to the needy and
14vulnerable, improve quality of life, express community values,
15and promote social change; and
16WHEREAS, The nonprofit organization community in California
17is a strong economic power that uses that power for the common
18good; and
19WHEREAS, California’s nonprofit organizations are national
20and international groundbreakers and leaders in the environment,
21in science, in safety net innovations, in civil rights, in the arts and
22humanities, and in the pursuit of democratic ideals; now, therefore,
23be it
24Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
25thereof concurring, That the Legislature, in recognition of the
26importance of nonprofit organizations to the economy and
27well-being of this state, declares June 22, 2016, as California
28Nonprofits Day; and be it further
29Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
30of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
