This measure will proclaim the month of June as California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing the way we view communication, health care, transportation, energy, travel, and business.

P1 1WHEREAS, Technology, innovation and the entrepreneurial
2spirit are woven into our identity as Americans. We are the pioneers
3that always look beyond to the next frontier. From sending a man
4to the moon, to leading the Internet revolution, to developing
5cutting-edge technology, the world has always looked to America
6to lead into the future and, time and again, we have delivered that
7and much more; and
8WHEREAS, American-born advancements have shaped every
9aspect of our modern world. Our smartphones, which evolve daily,
10have enabled instant global communication and a more robust
P2 1exchange of ideas and knowledge. Our children and grandchildren
2have the chance for longer and healthier lives because of
3breakthroughs in medical technologies and drug treatments.
4Cutting-edge processes have turned the United States into a leader
5in energy production, while better data and advanced weather
6warning systems hold the promise of saving lives from natural
7disasters; and
8WHEREAS, The next great medicine, energy source, or
9communication platform is waiting to be discovered by the people
10of California. Our greatest asset, and the biggest driver of
11California innovation, is California’s people, and we need laws
12that support and enable the people of California; and
13WHEREAS, California is home to a thriving world-class region
14which is home to high-tech corporations and thousands of
15innovative startup companies. These California-based corporations
16have given us amazing technological advances, such as the iPhone
17and semiconductors, and have changed how we utilize the Internet;
18and
19WHEREAS, Innovation and technology are essential to
20achieving and maintaining economic prosperity in this increasingly
21competitive world, and our place as the most innovative and
22technology advanced nation on Earth cannot be taken for granted.
23We must stay focused on promoting growth and expanding
24opportunities for the next great idea; and
25WHEREAS, California leads the nation with nearly 1.1 million
26tech industry jobs. For each job created in the tech sector,
27approximately 4.3 jobs are created in other local goods and services
28sectors across all income groups, including lawyers, dentists,
29schoolteachers, cooks, and retail clerks, among many others. There
30are an estimated 46,000 information and communication
31technology (ICT) industry-related businesses in California. ICT
32industry-related businesses produce $172 billion in revenue. These
33businesses employ more than one million Californians and pay
34out close to $76 billion in wages annually; and
35WHEREAS, Communities throughout California will
36commemorate the month of June as California Technology and
37Innovation Month, a month celebrating the innovation industry
38and the entrepreneurial spirit; now, therefore, be it
39Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
40thereof concurring, That in recognition of the innovation and
P3 1technology economy, the month of June shall be proclaimed
2California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for
3Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing
4the way we view communication, health care, transportation,
5energy, travel, business, and much more; and be it further
6Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
7of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
