Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 193—Relative to technology and innovation.

ACR 193, as amended, Calderon. California Technology and Innovation Month.

This measure will proclaim the month of June as California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing the way we view communication, health care, transportation, energy, travel, and business.

3We are the pioneers that always look beyond to the next frontier.
4From sending a man to the moon, to leading the Internet revolution,
5begin insert andend insert to developing cutting-edge technology, the world has always
6looked to America to lead into the future and, time and again, we
7have delivered that and much more; and

P2    1WHEREAS, American-born advancements have shaped every
2aspect of our modern world. Our smartphones, which evolve daily,
3have enabled instant global communication and a more robust
4exchange of ideas and knowledge. Our children and grandchildren
5have the chance for longer and healthier lives because of
6breakthroughs in medical technologies and drug treatments.
7Cutting-edge processes have turned the United States into a leader
8in energy production, while better data and advanced weather
9warning systems hold the promise of saving lives from natural
10disasters; and

11WHEREAS, The next great medicine, energy source, or
12communication platform is waiting to be discovered by the people
13of California. Our greatest asset, and the biggest driver of
14California innovation, is California’s people, and we need laws
15that support and enable the people of California; and

16WHEREAS, California is home to a thriving world-class region
17begin delete whichend deletebegin insert thatend insert is home to high-tech corporations and thousands of
18innovative startup companies. These California-based corporations
19have given us amazing technological advances, such as the iPhone
20and semiconductors, and have changed how we utilize the Internet;
21and

22WHEREAS, Innovation and technology are essential to
23achieving and maintaining economic prosperity in this increasingly
24competitive world, and our place as the most innovative and
25technology advanced nation on Earth cannot be taken for granted.
26We must stay focused on promoting growth and expanding
27opportunities for the next great idea; and

28WHEREAS, California leads the nation with nearly 1.1 million
29tech industry jobs. For each job created in the tech sector,
30approximately 4.3 jobs are created in other local goods and services
31sectors across all income groups, including lawyers, dentists,
32schoolteachers, cooks, and retail clerks, among many others. There
33are an estimated 46,000 information and communication
34technology (ICT) industry-related businesses in California. ICT
35industry-related businesses produce $172 billion in revenue. These
36businesses employ more than one million Californians and pay
37out close to $76 billion in wages annually; and

38WHEREAS, Communities throughout California will
39commemorate the month of June as California Technology and

2and the entrepreneurial spirit; now, therefore, be it

3Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
4thereof concurring,
That in recognition of the innovation and
5technology economy, the month of June shall be proclaimed
6California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for
7Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing
8the way we view communication, health care, transportation,
9energy, travel, business, and much more; and be it further

10Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
11of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
