Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 193—Relative to technology and innovation.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

ACR 193, as amended, Calderon. California Technology and Innovation Month.

This measure will proclaim the month of June as California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing the way we view communication, health care, transportation, energy, travel, and business.

P2    1WHEREAS, Technology, innovation, and the entrepreneurial
2spirit are woven into our identity as Americans. We are the pioneers
3that always look beyond to the next frontier. From sending a man
4to the moon, to leading the Internet revolution, and to developing
5cutting-edge technology, the world has always looked to America
6to lead into the future and, time and again, we have delivered that
7and much more; and

8WHEREAS, American-born advancements have shaped every
9aspect of our modern world. Our smartphones, which evolve daily,
10have enabled instant global communication and a more robust
11exchange of ideas and knowledge. Our children and grandchildren
12have the chance for longer and healthier lives because of
13breakthroughs in medical technologies and drug treatments.
14Cutting-edge processes have turned the United States into a leader
15in energy production, while better data and advanced weather
16warning systems hold the promise of saving lives from natural
17disasters; and

18WHEREAS, The next great medicine, energy source, or
19communication platform is waiting to be discovered by the people
20of California. Our greatest asset, and the biggest driver of
21California innovation, is California’s people, and we need laws
22that support and enable the people of California; and

23WHEREAS, California is home to a thriving world-class region
24that is home to high-tech corporations and thousands of innovative
25startup companies. These California-based corporations have given
26us amazing technological advances, such as the iPhone and
27semiconductors, and have changed how we utilize the Internet;
28and

29WHEREAS, Innovation and technology are essential to
30achieving and maintaining economic prosperity in this increasingly
31competitive world, and our place as the most innovative and
32technology advanced nation on Earth cannot be taken for granted.
33We must stay focused on promoting growth and expanding
34opportunities for the next great idea; and

35WHEREAS, California leads the nation with nearly 1.1 million
36tech industry jobs. For each job created in the tech sector,
37approximately 4.3 jobs are created in other local goods and services
38sectors across all income groups, including lawyers, dentists,
P3    1schoolteachers, cooks, and retail clerks, among many others. There
2are an estimated 46,000 information and communication
3technology (ICT) industry-related businesses in California. ICT
4industry-related businesses produce $172 billion in revenue. These
5businesses employ more than one million Californians and pay
6out close to $76 billion in wages annually; and

7WHEREAS, Communities throughout California will
8commemorate the month of June as California Technology and
9Innovation Month, a month celebrating the innovation industry
10and the entrepreneurial spirit; now, therefore, be it

11Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
12thereof concurring,
That in recognition of the innovation and
13technology economy, the month of June shall be proclaimed
14California Technology and Innovation Month, a special time for
15Californians to celebrate this ever-growing industry that is changing
16the way we view communication, health care, transportation,
17energy, travel, business, and much more; and be it further

18Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
19of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
