Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 194—Relative to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

ACR 194, as introduced, Low. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

This measure would proclaim the month of September 2016 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and state the commitment of the Legislature to support efforts to find cures for, and achieve prevention of, childhood cancer.

P1    1WHEREAS, Cancer is a leading cause of death by disease
2among children in this country; and

3WHEREAS, Many children in California are afflicted with
4cancer, experiencing enormous pain and suffering, and they and
5their families require extraordinary levels of information and
6support in their struggles against this disease; and

7WHEREAS, Peer support services have proven to significantly
8improve the quality of life for children diagnosed with cancer and
9their families, including summer and seasonal camps, such as
10Camp Okizu, Camp Summer Sault, Seany’s Camp Reach for the
11Sky, and the World’s Greatest Camp; and,

12WHEREAS, Successful prevention and treatment of many types
13of childhood cancer have not yet been achieved; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The conquest of cancer, a complex and intractable
2foe, requires a high level of commitment in order to provide the
3necessary resources and research; and

4WHEREAS, California has many of the world’s finest medical,
5academic, and commercial institutions, and must continue as a
6leader in the fight against this terrible disease; and

7WHEREAS, Increased public awareness of this major public
8health problem is a crucial step toward finding solutions; and

9WHEREAS, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an
10important nationwide tool for raising awareness among
11governmental officials and the public about the nature and scope
12of this problem; now, therefore, be it

13Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
14thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby recognizes and
15declares September 2016 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month;
16and be it further

17Resolved, That the Legislature is committed to supporting efforts
18to find cures for, and achieve prevention of, childhood cancer; and
19be it further

20Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
21of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
