Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 194—Relative to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

ACR 194, as amended, Low. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

This measure would proclaim the month of September 2016 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and state the commitment of the Legislature to support efforts to find cures for, and achieve prevention of, childhood cancer.

P1    1WHEREAS, Cancer is a leading cause of death by disease
2among children in this country; and

3WHEREAS, Many children in California are afflicted with
4cancer, experiencing enormous pain and suffering, and they and
5their families require extraordinary levels of information and
6support in their struggles against this disease; and

7WHEREAS, Peer support services havebegin insert beenend insert proven to
8significantly improve the quality of life for children diagnosed
9with cancer and their families, including summer and seasonal
10camps, such as Camp Okizu, Campbegin delete Summer Sault,end deletebegin insert Summersault,end insert
11 Seany’s Camp Reach for the Sky, and the World’s Greatest Camp;

WHEREAS, Psychosocial services, such as those provided by
2Kids Cancer Connection and American Cancer Fund for Children,
3have been demonstrated to improve the morale and quality of life
4of these courageous children and their families; and

5WHEREAS, Successful prevention and treatment of many types
6of childhood cancer have not yet been achieved; and

7WHEREAS, The conquest of cancer, a complex and intractable
8foe, requires a high level of commitment in order to provide the
9necessary resources and research; and

10WHEREAS, California has many of the world’s finest medical,
11academic, and commercial institutions, and must continue as a
12leader in the fight against this terrible disease; and

13WHEREAS, Increased public awareness of this major public
14health problem is a crucial step toward finding solutions; and

15WHEREAS, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an
16important nationwide tool for raising awareness among
17governmental officials and the public about the nature and scope
18of this problem; now, therefore, be it

19Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
20thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby recognizes and
21declares September 2016 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month;
22and be it further

23Resolved, That the Legislature is committed to supporting efforts
24to find cures for, and achieve prevention of, childhood cancer; and
25be it further

26Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
27of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
