Original Committee Reference: TRANS.
SUMMARY: Designates a segment of Interstate 210 between State
Route 2 and Orange Grove Boulevard in Los Angeles County as the
Jackie Robinson Memorial Highway.
The Senate amendments modify the terminus of the route segment
being named.
EXISTING LAW: Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation
and maintenance of highway signs.
AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY, this resolution:
1)Recounted the many lifetime accomplishments of Jack Roosevelt
ACR 197

"Jackie" Robinson.
2)Designated a specific segment of Interstate 210, between State
Route 2 and Orange Grove Boulevard in Los Angeles County, as
the "Jackie Robinson Memorial Highway."
3)Requested that the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent
with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations
from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those
signs.
FISCAL EFFECT: According to the Senate Appropriations
Committee, pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8, negligible state costs.
COMMENTS: This resolution recalls the remarkable career and
lifetime achievements of Jackie Robinson. While Mr. Robinson is
best known for breaking the color barrier in major league
baseball, his other accomplishments are numerous. For example,
he was an extraordinary athlete, becoming the first University
of California at Los Angeles Bruin to letter in four sports.
Later, he served his county honorably as a second lieutenant in
the United States Army.
In playing ten seasons in major league baseball, Mr. Robinson
stood defiantly against those who would work against racial
equality. In 1962, Mr. Robinson became the first African
American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His
baseball number, 42, is the only number to be retired by all of
baseball in honor of his accomplishments. Every year, on the
anniversary of Jackie Robinson's historic debut, all major
league baseball teams across the nation celebrate this milestone
by wearing jerseys with only "42" on the back.
Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife, Rachel Isum Robinson and
two children.
This resolution designates a portion of Interstate 210, near

where Jackie Robinson grew up, as the "Jackie Robinson Memorial
Highway."
