Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 201—Relative to California Young Parents Day.

This measure would recognize August 25, 2016, and every August 25 thereafter, as California Young Parents Day and would urge all Californians to join in celebrating California Young Parents Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, Young mothers and fathers, as all families, deserve
2dignity, tangible support, and recognition as important members
3of California communities; and

4WHEREAS, Young mothers and fathers, as all youth, are part
5of the fabric of vibrant communities across California and represent
6its future prosperity; and

7WHEREAS, Children, youth, and young adults under 20 years
8of age make up overbegin delete a quarterend deletebegin insert one-quarterend insert of California’s
9population; and

10WHEREAS, Young people of all economic backgrounds, gender
11identities and expression, sexualities, abilities, and immigration
12statuses have the right to parent the children they have; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Pregnant and parenting youth have the right, as all
2youth, to all support needed to continue with their educational and
3career goals, including child care, health care, housing assistance,
4and job training and other economic opportunities; and

5WHEREAS, Using negative language and stereotypes around
6young parenting serves only to blame and denigrate young people
7for their circumstances and does not reflect their realities; and

8WHEREAS, Young people of color, whether pregnant,
9parenting, or nonparenting, face persistent systemic inequities,
10including, but not limited to, poverty, racism, sexism, and violence,
11that shape and often undermine their decisionmaking and
12aspirations; and

13WHEREAS, Pregnant, parenting, and nonparenting youth must
14have access to culturally relevant and gender-sensitive sexual and
15reproductive health services and educational, material, economic,
16and emotional support; and

17WHEREAS, The health and wellness of young parents and their
18children is our shared responsibility and must be reflected in our
19state policies; now, therefore, be it

20Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
21thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes the
22contributions and needs of young parents and that this resolution
23serves as a framework to inform future policy decisions that affect
24their well being; and be it further

25Resolved, That August 25, 2016, and every August 25 thereafter,
26shall be recognized as “California Young Parents Day” and that
27all Californians are encouraged to celebrate the occasion; and be
28it further

29Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies
30of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
