An act to amend Section 51210 of the Education Code, relating to pupil instruction.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

AB 1476, as introduced, Brown. Pupil instruction: required courses of study.

Existing law requires the adopted course of study for grades 1 to 6, inclusive, to include certain areas of study, including, among others, English, mathematics, social sciences, science, and visual and performing arts, as specified.

This bill would make nonsubstantive changes to these provisions.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no. State-mandated local program: no.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

SECTION 1.  

Section 51210 of the Education Code is amended
2to read:

51210.  

The adopted course of study for grades 1 to 6, inclusive,
4shall include instruction, beginning in grade 1 and continuing
5through grade 6, in the following areas of study:

6(a) English, including knowledge of, and appreciation for
7literature and the language, as well as the skills of speaking,
8reading, listening, spelling, handwriting, and composition.

P2    1(b) Mathematics, including concepts, operational skills, and
2problem solving.

3(c) Social sciences, drawing upon the disciplines of
4anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science,
5psychology, and sociology, designed to fit the maturity of the
6pupils. Instruction shall provide a foundation for understanding
7the history, resources, development, and government of California
8and the United States of America; the development of the American
9economicbegin delete systemend deletebegin insert system,end insert including the role of the entrepreneur
10and labor; the relations of persons to their human and natural
11environment; eastern and western cultures and civilizations;
12contemporary issues; and the wise use of natural resources.

13(d) Science, including the biological and physical aspects, with
14emphasis on the processes of experimental inquiry and on the place
15of humans in ecological systems.

16(e) Visual and performing arts, including instruction in the
17subjects of dance, music,begin delete theatre,end deletebegin insert theater,end insert and visual arts, aimed
18at the development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills of
19creative expression.

20(f) Health, including instruction in the principles and practices
21of individual, family, and community health.

22(g) Physical education, with emphasis upon the physical
23activities for the pupils that may be conducive to health and vigor
24of body and mind, for a total period of time of not less than 200
25minutes each 10 schooldays, exclusive of recesses and the lunch
26period.

27(h) Other studies that may be prescribed by the governing board.
