Existing law requires each pupil completing grade 12 to satisfy certain requirements as a condition of receiving a diploma of graduation from high school. These requirements include the completion of designated coursework in grades 9 to 12, inclusive, including the completion of at least 2 courses in mathematics, 2 courses in science, including biological and physical sciences, and one course in visual or performing arts, foreign language, or career technical education. Existing law authorizes the governing board of a school district to adopt additional coursework requirements. Existing law authorizes the governing board of a school district that requires the completion of more than 2 courses in mathematics for graduation from high school to award a pupil up to one mathematics course credit for successfully completing an approved computer science course, as provided.
This bill would make nonsubstantive changes to that latter provision.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
Section 51225.35 of the Education Code is
2amended to read:
(a) (1) If the governing board of a school district
4requires more than two courses in mathematics for graduation from
5high school, the governing board of the school district may award
6a pupil up to one mathematics course credit pursuant to
7subparagraph (B) of paragraph (1) of subdivision (a) of Section
851225.3 for successfully completing a “category C” approved
9computer science course.
10(2) The governing board ofbegin delete aend deletebegin insert theend insert school district is encouraged
11to ensure that any computer science course that the school district
12awards a pupil mathematics course
credit for pursuant to paragraph
13(1) builds upon fundamental mathematics content.
14(3) The governing board ofbegin delete aend deletebegin insert theend insert school district is encouraged
15to support schools in submitting any computer science course that
16a school wishes to use to fulfill school district imposed mathematics
17subject area requirements to the University of California for
18certification and addition to the school’s “A-G” course list.
19(b) For purposes of this section, “category C” refers to the
20“A-G” admission requirements for the California State University
21and the University of California.
