An act to amend Sections 8000 and 8005 of the Business and Professions Code, relating to professions and vocations.

Existing law provides for the licensure and regulation of court reporters by the Court Reporters Board of California, which is within the Department of Consumer Affairs, and authorizes the board to appoint an executive officer and committees and to employ other employees, as specified. Existing law repeals these provisions on January 1, 2017.

This bill would extend those provisions until January 1, 2021.

Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: yes. State-mandated local program: no.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

SECTION 1.  

Section 8000 of the Business and Professions

is amended to read:

8000.  

(a) There is in the Department of Consumer Affairs a
2Court Reporters Board of California, which consists of five
3members, three of whom shall be public members and two of
4whom shall be holders of certificates issued under this chapter
5who have been actively engaged as shorthand reporters within this
6state for at least five years immediately preceding their
7appointment.

8(b) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2021,
9and as of that date is repealed.

10(c) Notwithstanding any other law,begin delete theend delete repeal of this section
11renders the board subject to review by the appropriate policy
12committees of the Legislature.

SEC. 2.  

Section 8005 of the Business and Professions Code is
14amended to read:

8005.  

(a) The Court Reporters Board of California is charged
16with the executive functions necessary for effectuating the purposes
17of this chapter. It may appoint committees as it deems necessary
18or proper. The board may appoint, prescribe the duties, and fix the
19salary of an executive officer. Except as provided by Section 159.5,
20the board may also employ other employees as may be necessary,
21subject to civil service and other law.

22(b) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2021,
23and as of that date is repealed.
