An act to amend Section 15301 of the Government Code, relating to temporary shelter.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

AB 2254, as amended, Achadjian. Armories: homeless shelter.

Existing law requires the Military Department to make certain state armories available to specified cities and counties for the purpose of providing temporary shelter for homeless persons from October 15 through April 15 each year.

This bill would revise the list of armories to be made available to include the Atascaderobegin delete and Camp San Luis Obispo armoriesend deletebegin insert armoryend insert in San Luis Obispo County.

SECTION 1.  

Section 15301 of the Government Code is

(a) The El Centro and Calexico armories in Imperial
4County; the Culver City, Glendale, Inglewood, Long Beach 7th
5Street, Pomona, Sylmar, and West Los Angeles Federal Avenue
6armories in Los Angeles County; the San Rafael armory in Marin
7County; the Merced armory in Merced County; the Fullerton and

2Placer County; the Corona, Indio, and Riverside armories in
3Riverside County; the El Cajon, Escondido, and Vista armories in
4San Diego County; the Atascaderobegin delete and Camp San Luis Obispo

begin insert armoryend insert in San Luis Obispo County; the San Mateo armory
6in San Mateo County; the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria armories
7in Santa Barbara County; the Gilroy, San Jose Hedding Street, and
8Sunnyvale armories in Santa Clara County; the Santa Cruz and
9Watsonville armories in Santa Cruz County; the Redding armory
10in Shasta County; the Petaluma and Santa Rosa armories in Sonoma
11County; and the Oxnard and Ventura armories in Ventura County,
12shall be made available to these counties or any city in these
13counties for the purpose of providing temporary shelter for
14homeless persons during the period from October 15 through April
1515 each year.

16(b) The Adjutant General may, in his or her sole discretion, use
17alternate armories as may be necessary to meet the operational
18needs of the Military Department. Additionally, any county or
19city, including those not listed in subdivision (a), may use any
20armory within its jurisdiction subject to the approval of the
21Adjutant General.

22(c) Subject to appropriation in the annual Budget Act, the
23Adjutant General may increase or decrease the number of days of
24operation among all of the armories funded in any year to best
25meet cold weather demands as they develop. The Adjutant General
26shall periodically report to the counties authorized to receive funds
27on the ongoing availability of remaining funded shelter days.
