This measure would designate a portion of State Highway Route 166 in the County of Santa Barbara as the Officer Samuel Sanchez Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1 1WHEREAS, The Guadalupe Police Department is the primary
2law enforcement agency charged with protecting and serving the
37,080 citizens in the City of Guadalupe, California; and
4WHEREAS, Samuel Sanchez was born on April 6, 1944, into
5a large California native family of nine children, with six of his
6siblings in law enforcement; and
7WHEREAS, Samuel Sanchez was sworn into the Guadalupe
8Police Department on November 11, 1965, and served the City of
9Guadalupe for four years alongside his brother, Elias Sanchez; and
10WHEREAS, On April 13, 1969, while transportingbegin delete twoend deletebegin insert threeend insert
11 prisoners to jail, Officer Sanchez was killed in a head-on collision
P2 1with a driver under the influence on State Highway Route 166;
2and
3WHEREAS, Officer Sanchez was survived by one infant
4daughter, Kristen Sanchez; and
5WHEREAS, It is appropriate to memorialize the service and
6sacrifice of Officer Sanchez, as a sign of respect and recognition
7to his friends and family members who are left behind, by
8designating a portion of State Highway Route 166 in the County
9of Santa Barbara in his honor; now, therefore, be it
10Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
11thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
12portion of State Highway Route 166 from Bonita School Road to
13Simas Road in the County of Santa Barbara as the Officer Samuel
14Sanchez Memorial Highway; and be it further
15Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
16to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
17signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
18special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
19sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
20further
21Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
22this resolution to the Director of Transportation and the author for
23appropriate distribution.
