          DIGEST:  This resolution designates a portion of State Highway  
          Route (SR) 166 in Santa Barbara County as the Officer Samuel  
          Sanchez Memorial Highway.


          ANALYSIS:   


          This resolution designates the portion of SR 166 from Bonita  
          School Road to Simas Road in Santa Barbara County as the Officer  
          Samuel Sanchez Memorial Highway.  This resolution further  
          requests that the Department of Transportation erect appropriate  
          signs upon receiving donations from non-state sources to cover  
          the costs.  

          Comments

          Purpose.  The author introduced this resolution to honor the

          life and service of Officer Samuel Sanchez.

          Background on Officer Sanchez.  Officer Sanchez was born on  
          April 6, 1944 into a family of nine children.  Officer Sanchez  
          was sworn into the Guadalupe Police Department on November 11,  
          1965, and served the City of Guadalupe for four years alongside  
          his brother, Elias Sanchez.

          On April 13, 1969, while transporting three prisoners to jail,  
          Officer Sanchez was killed on SR 166 in a head-on collision with  
          a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.  

          Officer Sanchez was survived by his infant daughter, Kristen  
          Sanchez.
