Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 15—Relative to the National Day of the Cowboy.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 15, as introduced, Fuller. National Day of the Cowboy.

This measure would recognize July 25, 2015, as the National Day of the Cowboy, and would encourage the people of the State of California to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

P1    1WHEREAS, Pioneering men and women, known as cowboys,
2helped establish America’s frontiers; and

3WHEREAS, The cowboy archetype transcends gender,
4generations, ethnicity, geographic boundaries, and political
5affiliation; and

6WHEREAS, The cowboy embodies honesty, integrity, courage,
7compassion, and determination; and

8WHEREAS, The cowboy spirit exemplifies patriotism and
9strength of character; and

10WHEREAS, The cowboy is an excellent steward of the land
11and its creatures; and

12WHEREAS, The core values expressed within the Cowboy
13Code of Conduct continue to inspire the pursuit of the highest
14caliber of personal integrity; and

15WHEREAS, Cowboy traditions have been part of the American
16landscape and culture since 1523, and today’s cowboys and
P2    1cowgirls continue to strive to serve and to preserve and perpetuate
2this unique element of America’s heritage; and

3WHEREAS, The cowboy continues to be an important part of
4the economy through the work of approximately 656,500 ranches
5in all 50 states; and

6WHEREAS, Membership and participation in the National Day
7of the Cowboy Celebration (NDOC), Single Action Shooting
8Society (SASS), Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA),
9Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA), American
10Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Professional Rodeo Cowboys
11Association (PRCA), Championship Bull Riding (CBR), Women’s
12Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), and other organizations
13that encompass the livelihood of the cowboy continue to expand
14nationally and internationally; and

15WHEREAS, The cowboy and his horse are a central figure in
16literature, art, film, poetry, photography, and music; and

17WHEREAS, The cowboy is a true American icon occupying a
18central place in the public’s imagination; now, therefore, be it

19Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
20thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes July 25, 2015,
21as the “National Day of the Cowboy”; and be it further

22Resolved, That the Legislature encourages the people of the
23State of California to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies
24and activities; and be it further

25Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
26this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
