Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 15—Relative to the National Day of the Cowboy.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 15, as amended, Fuller. National Day of the Cowboy.

This measure would recognize July 25, 2015, as the National Day of the Cowboy, and would encourage the people of the State of California to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

P1    1WHEREAS, Pioneering men and women, known as cowboys,
2helped establish America’s frontiers; and

3WHEREAS, The cowboy archetype transcends gender,
4generations, ethnicity, geographic boundaries, and political
5affiliation; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The cowboy embodies honesty, integrity, courage,
2compassion, and determination; and

3WHEREAS, The cowboy spirit exemplifies patriotism and
4strength of character; and

5WHEREAS, The cowboy is an excellent steward of the land
6and its creatures; and

7WHEREAS, The core values expressed within the Cowboy
8Code of Conduct continue to inspire the pursuit of the highest
9caliber of personal integrity; and

10WHEREAS, Cowboy traditions have been part of the American
11landscape and culture since 1523, and today’s cowboys and
12cowgirls continue to strive to serve and to preserve and perpetuate
13this unique element of America’s heritage; and

14WHEREAS, The cowboy continues to be an important part of
15the economy through the work of approximately 656,500 ranches
16in all 50 states; and

17WHEREAS, Membership and participation in the National Day
18of the Cowboy Celebration (NDOC), Single Action Shooting
19Society (SASS), Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA),
20Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA), American
21Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), Professional Rodeo Cowboys
22Association (PRCA), Championship Bull Riding (CBR), Women’s
23Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), and other organizations
24that encompass the livelihood of the cowboy continue to expand
25nationally and internationally; and

26WHEREAS, The cowboy and his horse are a central figure in
27literature, art, film, poetry, photography, and music; and

28WHEREAS, The cowboy is a true American icon occupying a
29central place in the public’s imagination; now, therefore, be it

30Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
31thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes July 25, 2015,
32as the “National Day of the Cowboy”; and be it further

33Resolved, That the Legislature encourages the people of the
34State of California to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies
35and activities; and be it further

36Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
37this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
