Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 18—Relative to Vietnamese-American Heritage Month.

SCR 18, as introduced, Nguyen. Vietnamese-American Heritage Month.

This measure would memorialize the month of April 2015, as Vietnamese-American Heritage Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Over the past four decades, Vietnamese immigrants
2have enriched the social, cultural, and economic landscape of the
3United States and the great State of California; and

4WHEREAS, Many Vietnamese Americans living in the State
5of California today came to the United States after the Fall of
6Saigon on April 30, 1975, which marked the beginning of an
7exodus of over one million Vietnamese who left their homeland
8fleeing communism in search of freedom and democracy; and

9WHEREAS, The State of California is home to over 580,000
10Vietnamese Americans with the County of Orange having the
11largest concentration of Vietnamese residents living outside of
12Vietnam; and

13WHEREAS, As new immigrants, Vietnamese Americans
14overcame social, linguistic, and economic challenges through hard
15work, achieving success in a plethora of professional fields,
16including business, politics and law, science and education,
17literature and journalism, and sports and entertainment; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Society has benefited from a long tradition of
2Vietnamese Americans serving in the United States Armed Forces,
3with 2014 marking the first time that a Vietnamese American was
4promoted to the rank of General; from science advanced by the
5first Vietnamese-born refugee to conduct experiments aboard the
6Space Shuttle Columbia in 1992; and from entertainment provided
7by All-Pro NFL athletes, Emmy Award-winning anchors,
8acclaimed actors, and talented comedians; and

9WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans have enhanced California’s
10culture through the establishment of vibrant Little Saigon
11communities throughout the state that preserve Vietnamese
12heritage, food, language, and customs for younger generations and
13allow all Californians to be immersed in the richness of Vietnamese
14culture; and

15WHEREAS, Refusing to forget their historical struggle for
16freedom and democracy, Vietnamese Americans throughout the
17United States and the State of California continue to speak out
18against the systematic assaults on the freedoms of expression and
19religion perpetrated today by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
20and advocate in favor of human rights and democracy in Vietnam
21and worldwide; now therefore, be it

22Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
23thereof concurring,
That the State of California takes great pleasure
24in recognizing April 2015 as Vietnamese-American Heritage
25Month, and declares that the immeasurable economic, social, and
26cultural contributions of Vietnamese Americans are worthy of
27recognition by all Californians and that we should never forget the
28historic struggle of the Vietnamese-American people; and be it
29further

30Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
31this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
