This measure would proclaim February 28, 2015, as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day in coordination with Rare Disease Day in California.

P1 1WHEREAS, There are nearly 7,000 diseases and conditions
2that are considered rare and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is one
3of those diseases; and
4WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a serious disorder
5causing progressive, incurable lung disease; and
6WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis progresses quickly,
7often causing disability or death within a few short years; and
8WHEREAS, In many cases there is no identified cause of
9Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; and
10WHEREAS, Approximately 132,000 people in the United States
11are estimated to have Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; and
12WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis may be 5 to 10
13times more prevalent than previously thought because Idiopathic
14Pulmonary Fibrosis is often misdiagnosed and under diagnosed;
15and
P2 1WHEREAS, There is a need to increase awareness and detection
2of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis by expanding education and
3promoting access to quality care and services for this disease; and
4WHEREAS, February 28, 2015, is Rare Disease Day in
5California; now, therefore, be it
6Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
7thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims February
828, 2015, as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day; and
9be it further
10Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
11this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
