Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 19—Relative to Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 19, Nguyen. Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day.

This measure would proclaim February 28, 2015, as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day in coordination with Rare Disease Day in California.

WHEREAS, There are nearly 7,000 diseases and conditions that are considered rare and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is one of those diseases; and

WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is a serious disorder causing progressive, incurable lung disease; and

WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis progresses quickly, often causing disability or death within a few short years; and

WHEREAS, In many cases there is no identified cause of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 132,000 people in the United States are estimated to have Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; and

WHEREAS, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis may be 5 to 10 times more prevalent than previously thought because Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis is often misdiagnosed and under diagnosed; and

WHEREAS, There is a need to increase awareness and detection of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis by expanding education and promoting access to quality care and services for this disease; and

WHEREAS, February 28, 2015, is Rare Disease Day in California; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims February 28, 2015, as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Day; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
