Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 27—Relative to the Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway.

SCR 27, as introduced, Huff. Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway.

This measure would designate a portion of State Highway Route 91 in the County of Orange as the Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the costs, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Officer Jerry Scott Hatch was a police officer for
2the Fullerton Police Department; and

3WHEREAS, On Sunday, June 29, 1975, while on his way to
4work, Officer Hatch stopped to assist a motorist with an engine
5fire on the Beach Boulevard off ramp of State Highway Route 91.
6As he was placing his fire extinguisher back in his trunk, Officer
7Hatch was struck from behind by a drunk driver. On June 30, 1975,
8Officer Hatch succumbed to his injuries; and

9WHEREAS, Officer Hatch was the first Fullerton police officer
10to be killed in the line of duty; and

11WHEREAS, Fellow officers say that Officer Hatch’s good
12samaritan act was typical for him; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Officer Hatch was described as an officer who
2always had a smile and who had received two citizen citations in
3the short six months he was on the force; and

4WHEREAS, Officer Hatch left behind his parents, Paul and
5Dorothy Hatch, his wife, Ruth, and his daughter, Audrey, who was
6only two years old at the time of his death; and

7WHEREAS, It is appropriate to memorialize the service and
8sacrifice of Officer Hatch, by designating a portion of State
9Highway Route 91 in the County of Orange in his honor; now,
10therefore, be it

11Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
12thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
13portion of State Highway Route 91 between State Highway Route
1457 and State Highway Route 39 (Beach Boulevard) in the County
15of Orange as the Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial
16Highway; and be it further

17Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
18to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
19signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
20special designation, and upon receiving donations from nonstate
21sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
22further

23Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
24this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
25for appropriate distribution.
