Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 27—Relative to the Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway.

SCR 27, as amended, Huff. Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway.

This measure would designate a portion of State Highway Route 91 in the County of Orange as the Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the costs, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Officer Jerry Scott Hatch was a police officer for
2the Fullerton Police Department; and

3WHEREAS, On Sunday, June 29, 1975, while on his way to
4work, Officer Hatch stopped to assist a motorist with an engine
5fire on the Beach Boulevard off ramp of State Highway Route 91.
6As he was placing his fire extinguisher back in his trunk, Officer
7Hatch was struck from behind by a drunk driver. On June 30, 1975,
8Officer Hatch succumbed to his injuries; and

9WHEREAS, Officer Hatch was the first Fullerton police officer
10to be killed in the line of duty; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Fellow officers say that Officer Hatch’s good
2samaritan act was typical for him; and

3WHEREAS, Officer Hatch was described as an officer who
4always had a smile and who had received two citizen citations in
5the short six months he was on the force; and

6WHEREAS, Officer Hatch left behind his parents, Paul and
7Dorothy Hatch, his wife, Ruth, and his daughter, Audrey, who was

9WHEREAS, It is appropriate to memorialize the service and
10sacrifice of Officerbegin delete Hatch,end deletebegin insert Hatchend insert by designating a portion of State
11Highway Route 91 in the County of Orange in his honor; now,
12therefore, be it

13Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
14thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
15portion of State Highway Route 91 between Statebegin delete Highway Route
1657end delete
begin insert College Boulevardend insert andbegin delete State Highway Route 39 (Beach
17Boulevard)end delete
begin insert Magnolia Avenueend insert in the County of Orange as the
18Fullerton Police Officer Jerry Hatch Memorial Highway; and be
19it further

20Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
21to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
22signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
23special designation, and upon receiving donations from nonstate
24sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
25further

26Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
27this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
28for appropriate distribution.
