This measure would declare April 12, 2015, to April 18, 2015, inclusive, as California Library Week.

P1 1WHEREAS, California Library Week seeks to partner with the
2efforts surrounding National Library Week, which is being
3celebrated in public libraries throughout the United States from
4April 12, 2015, to April 18, 2015, inclusive; and
5WHEREAS, More than 21 million people use California’s public
6libraries each year; and
7WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are changing and
8dynamic places, offering books, computers, Internet access, e-mail
9reference, e-books, and other innovative services to connect their
10users with ideas and information; and
11WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are valued community
12centers providing education, information, knowledge, and
13entertainment; and
14WHEREAS, California’s public libraries and librarians advance
15teaching and learning by helping students, faculty, seniors,
P2 1veterans, researchers, and other members of the general public
2obtain the best, most accurate, and complete information; and
3WHEREAS, California’s public libraries provide equal and
4economical services to library users, and in many cases, serve as
5a community’s only point of access to resources for learning; and
6WHEREAS, California’s public libraries provide technology
7training and help to bridge the “digital divide” for those who do
8not have access to technology at home or at school; and
9WHEREAS, California’s public libraries change lives by serving
10over 20,000 adults annually through customized literacy services
11delivered primarily through trained volunteers, who contribute
12over 750,000 hours annually to assist adults in learning how to
13read; and
14WHEREAS, The students of California are a rapidly growing
15group of library users, visiting the state’s public libraries after
16school and on weekends for homework assistance and for materials
17to use in school assignments; and
18WHEREAS, California’s public libraries are important
19community educational resources, providing books and innovative
20programs and services such as preschool literacy readiness, Toddler
21Times, the California Summer Reading Program, Grandparents
22and Books, and Reach Out and Read in conjunction with pediatric
23clinics; and
24WHEREAS, This year the California State Library will be
25celebrating its 165th year of providing technical assistance and
26consultation to California’s public libraries, and preserving and
27hosting an abundance of California’s priceless historical items;
28and
29WHEREAS, California’s public libraries preserve our cultural
30heritage, inform our present, and inspire our future; now, therefore,
31be it
32Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
33thereof concurring, That the Legislature declares the week of April
3412, 2015, to April 18, 2015, inclusive, as California Library Week,
35and commends California’s public libraries, librarians, and all
36library workers for enriching the lives of California residents and
37helping to make our state an exceptional place to live, learn, and
38work; and be it further
P3 1Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
2this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
