This measure would designate the month of April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month and would encourage residents to show support for autism awareness.

P1    1WHEREAS, Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder 
2affecting the social, communication, and behavioral skills of those 
3affected by it; and
4WHEREAS, More than 3.5 million Americans live with an 
5autism spectrum disorder; and
6WHEREAS, More children are being diagnosed on the autism 
7spectrum than everbegin delete beforeend deletebegin insert before,end insert with diagnoses as high as one 
8in 68 births nationally; and
9WHEREAS, Autism is the fastest-growing developmental 
10disability, and in this country the prevalence of autism in children 
11increased by 119.4 percent from 2000 to 2010; and
P2    1WHEREAS, Only 16.8 percent of the population with disabilities 
2is employed; and
3WHEREAS, There is no cure for autism, but it is 
4well-documented that if individuals with autism receive treatment 
5early in their lives, it is often possible for those individuals to lead 
6significantly improved lives; and
7WHEREAS, Individuals with autism often require a lifetime of 
8specialized and community support services to ensure their health 
9and safety, and to support families’ resilience as they manage the 
10psychological and financial burdens autism presents; now, 
11therefore, be it
12Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly 
13thereof concurring, That the Legislature designates the month of 
14April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month and encourages residents 
15to show support for autism awareness; and be it further
16Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of 
17this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
