Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 32—Relative to Autism Awareness Month.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 32, as amended, Beall. Autism Awareness Month.

This measure would designate the month of April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month and would encourage residents to show support for autism awareness.

P2    1WHEREAS, Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder
2affecting the social, communication, and behavioral skills of those
3affected by it; and

4WHEREAS, More than 3.5 million Americans live with an
5autism spectrum disorder; and

6WHEREAS, More children are being diagnosed on the autism
7spectrum than ever before, with diagnoses as high as one in 68
8births nationally; and

9WHEREAS, Autism is the fastest-growing developmental
10disability, and in this country the prevalence of autism in children
11increased by 119.4 percent from 2000 to 2010; and

12WHEREAS, Only 16.8 percent of the population with disabilities
13is employed; and

14WHEREAS, There is no cure for autism, but it is
15well-documented that if individuals with autism receive treatment
16early in their lives, it is often possible for those individuals to lead
17significantly improved lives; and

18WHEREAS, Individuals with autism often require a lifetime of
19specialized and community support services to ensure their health
20and safety, and to support families’ resilience as they manage the
21psychological and financial burdens autism presents; now,
22therefore, be it

23Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
24thereof concurring,
That the Legislature designates the month of
25April 2015 as Autism Awareness Month and encourages residents
26to show support for autism awareness; and be it further

27Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
28this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
