This measure would recognize female athletes, coaches, officials, and sports administrators for their important contribution in promoting the value of sports in the achievement of full human potential and would proclaim February 1 to 7, 2015, as California Girls and Women in Sports Week.

P1 1WHEREAS, By an act of the United States Congress, February
24, 1987, was proclaimed as the first national Girls and Women in
3Sports Day in honor of Flo Hyman, a volleyball legend whose
4efforts to promote equality in sports were cut short by her untimely
5and tragic death; and
6WHEREAS, Since that time women have made considerable
7advances in professional, collegiate, club, intramural, masters,
8high school, junior high school, youth, and recreational sports; and
9WHEREAS, Many female athletes have distinguished
10themselves as representatives of California and the nation in
11international competition and the Olympic games; and
12WHEREAS, Participation in sports is acknowledged as a positive
13force in developing and promoting physical, mental, moral, social,
14and emotional well-being; and it is well established that
15participation in athletics builds self-esteem, communication skills,
P2 1discipline, and perseverance, all qualities that make a positive and
2significant difference in the quality of life and in the level of
3accomplishment; and
4WHEREAS, We need to encourage women of all ages to
5compete and contribute to sports at all levels of competition and
6recreation to help prepare the next generation of female athletes
7and sports leaders; and
8WHEREAS, The combined efforts of many organizations
9including the Women’s Sports Foundation, the California
10Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance,
11and the California National Organization for Women, have served
12to bring needed information and important recognition of this day,
13as well as furthered the dreams and inspired today’s female
14athletes; now, therefore, be it
15Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
16thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes female athletes,
17coaches, officials, and sports administrators for their important
18contribution in promoting the value of sports in the achievement
19of full human potential and hereby proclaims February 1 to 7,
20inclusive, 2015, as California Girls and Women in Sports Week;
21and be it further
22Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
23this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
