Senate Joint Resolution No. 4—Relative to the Sally Ride statue.

This measure would memorialize the Congress of the United States to place a statue of Sally Ride next to the statue of former President Ronald Reagan in the Congressional collection representing California.

P1    1WHEREAS, By act of the Congress of the United States, each
2state is invited to provide two statues of distinguished citizens for
3display in the United States Capitol; and

4WHEREAS, California, in years past, provided two statues of
5notable citizens that have been displayed in the United States
6Capitol; and

7WHEREAS, One of those statues is of Father Junipero Serra
8who is known as an eloquent preacher and founder of numerous
9missions throughout California; and

10WHEREAS, Father Junipero Serra can best be memorialized
11by locating his statue in a place of honor inbegin delete the Capitol ofend delete
P2    1 California where citizens and visitors can enjoy it and be reminded
2of his significant historical impact upon our state; and

3WHEREAS, California has a citizen born in California, Sally
4Kristen Ride, Ph.D., who is exceptionally worthy of national
5commemoration. She stands alone in California and American
6history as a pioneer in space exploration, academia, and as a role
7model to Americans everywhere; and

8WHEREAS, On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first
9American woman and youngestbegin delete personend deletebegin insert Americanend insert to go into space
10when she traveled aboard the Challenger; and

11WHEREAS, Sally Ride served her country, California, and
12future generations as a member of the President’s Committee of
13Advisors on Science and Technology; director of the California
14Space Institute; inductee into the National Women’s Hall of Fame,
15the California Hall of Fame, the Aviation Hall of Fame, and the
16Astronaut Hall of Fame; recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public
17Service, the von Braun Award, the Lindbergh Eagle, the NCAA’s
18Theodore Roosevelt Award, and the NASA Space Flight Medal
19(twice); and

20WHEREAS, Sally Ride has posthumously received the
21Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed
22in the United States; and

23WHEREAS, the People of California wish to place a statue of
24Sally Kristen Ride, Ph.D. in Statuary Hall in the United States
25Capitol; and

26WHEREAS, The Commission on the Status of Women shall
27select a commission to represent the state in selecting the sculptor
28or sculptors to sculpt the statue and obtain the necessary funds to
29carry out this resolution; now, therefore, be it

30Resolved by the Senate and the Assembly of the State of
31California, jointly,
That the Legislature of the State of California
32respectfully memorializes the Congress of the United States to
33place a statue of Sally Kristen Ride alongside the statue of former
34President Ronald Reagan in the Congressional collection
35representing the State of California; and be it further

36Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
37this resolution to the President and Vice President of the United
38States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Majority

2California in the Congress of the United States.
