Senate Joint Resolution No. 6—Relative to Iran.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SJR 6, as introduced, Stone. Iran: negotiations: nuclear program.

This measure would declare that the Legislature of the State of California supports finding the best long-term solution for peace and disarmament in the Middle East and a nuclear-free Iran, and believes that any agreement signed with Iran should provide for ongoing international oversight.

P1    1WHEREAS, The people of the State of California support efforts
2to promote peace and prosperity across the globe; and

3WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of California
4recognizes the importance of maintaining a diplomatic dialogue
5in the Middle East, especially as it pertains to Israel and Iran; and

6WHEREAS, The proliferation of nuclear capability in the Middle
7East will certainly present additional complications in an already
8diplomatically tense region; and

9WHEREAS, The Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015 was
10designed to strengthen American diplomatic efforts with Iran; and

11WHEREAS, The Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015
12complies with the commitment the President made that the United
13States would impose no new sanctions during the course of
14negotiations with Iran; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The goal and intent of negotiations with Iran was
2to require that Iran dismantle its nuclear program; and

3WHEREAS, The proposed agreement being presently negotiated
4will have a sunset period after which the future of international
5oversight on Iran’s nuclear ambitions may be unclear; now,
6therefore, be it

7Resolved by the Senate and the Assembly of the State of
8California, jointly,
That the Legislature of the State of California
9supports finding the best long-term solution for peace and
10disarmament in the Middle East and a nuclear-free Iran; and be it
11further

12Resolved, That the Legislature of the State of California believes
13if any agreement is signed with Iran, the agreement should provide
14for ongoing international oversight and Iran’s cooperation in
15maintaining transparency with its nuclear ambitions; and be it
16further

17Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
18this resolution to the President and the Vice President of the United
19States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to the
20Majority Leader of the Senate, to each Senator and Representative
21from California in the Congress of the United States, and to the
22author for appropriate distribution.
