P1 1WHEREAS, Engineers employ their scientific knowledge and
2analytical skills for the betterment of the United States; and
3WHEREAS, The mission of DiscoverE (formerly the National
4Engineers Week Foundation) is to sustain and grow a dynamic
5engineering profession through outreach, education, celebration,
6and volunteerism as needed to keep the United States a global
7leader in engineering and engineering education; and
8WHEREAS, The sponsors of National Engineers Week are
9working together to transform the engineering workforce through
10greater inclusion of women and underrepresented minorities; and
11WHEREAS, By engaging young students, parents, and educators
12in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,
13engineers help them discover how they can make a meaningful
14difference in the world; and
15WHEREAS, The partnership between engineers and teachers
16inspires future generations of engineering and technology talent;
17and
18WHEREAS, Tens of thousands of engineers and engineering
19students will serve their communities not only through their work
20but, at this time of year, by reaching into hundreds of local
21communities; and
22WHEREAS, Engineers have helped meet the major global
23challenges of our time, including providing state-of-the-art
24transportation and information technology infrastructures,
25enhancing national security, and developing the clean energy
P2 1technologies needed to power the people of the United States into
2the future; and
3WHEREAS, An overwhelming number of people in the United
4States (87 percent) find that engineering is the profession that most
5frequently contributes to positive innovations and inventions in
6society, according to a survey conducted by TE Connectivity of
7impressions of engineering; and
8WHEREAS, Engineers are a crucial link in research,
9development, and the transformation of scientific discoveries into
10useful products and jobs, as the people of the United States look
11more than ever to engineers and their imagination, knowledge,
12and analytical skills to meet the challenges of the future; and
13WHEREAS, The National Science Board’s “Science and
14Engineering Indicators 2010, 2012, and 2014” shows that while
15the number of students obtaining engineering degrees in the United
16States has reached an all-time high, the rates for women and
17underrepresented minorities do not reflect national demographics,
18and women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering
19workforce, although to a lesser degree than in the past; and
20WHEREAS, A 2012 survey by the Intel Corporation indicates
21that United States teenagers are more likely to consider a degree
22in engineering after learning about what engineers do; and
23WHEREAS, Only four percent of the nation’s workforce is
24composed of scientists and engineers, this group disproportionately
25creates jobs for the other 96 percent; and
26WHEREAS, DiscoverE has grown into a formal coalition of
27more than 100 professional societies, major corporations, and
28government agencies that are dedicated to ensuring a diverse and
29well-educated engineering workforce, promoting literacy in
30science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and raising
31public awareness and appreciation of the contributions of engineers
32to society; and
33WHEREAS, National Engineers Week is celebrated during the
34week of George Washington’s birthday to honor the contributions
35that the first United States President, a military engineer and land
36surveyor, made to engineering; and
37WHEREAS, February 22, 2015, to February 28, 2015, inclusive,
38has been designated as National Engineers Week by DiscoverE
39and the theme is, “Engineering New Horizons,” spotlighting all
P3 1the amazing things engineers do every day to make the world a
2better place; now, therefore, be it
3Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
4hereby recognizes the week of February 22, 2015, to February 28,
52015, inclusive, as National Engineers Week and acknowledges
6the services bestowed upon the citizens of California by engineers;
7and be it further
8Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
9this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
