P1 1WHEREAS, Every five minutes, a woman in the United States
2is told she has lung cancer; and
3WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of
4women in the United States, having surpassed breast cancer in
51987; and
6WHEREAS, The lung cancer death rate in women has more
7than doubled over the past 37 years; and
8WHEREAS, Women are disproportionately burdened with
9chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, known as COPD, compared
10to men in terms of illness and death; and
11WHEREAS, In addition, asthma is more common in women
12than men; and
13WHEREAS, Advocacy and increased awareness will result in
14more and better treatment for women with lung cancer, COPD,
15asthma, and other lung diseases and will ultimately save lives; and
16WHEREAS, LUNG FORCE is the national movement led by
17the American Lung Association with the mission of making lung
18cancer and lung disease history by uniting women to stand together
19with collective strength and determination to lead the fight against
20lung cancer and for lung health; now, therefore, be it
21Resolved by the Senate of the State of California,That the Senate
22recognizes the second full week in May 2015 as Women‘s Lung
23Health Week, and commends the many residents and organizations
24throughout the State of California that continue to promote the
25awareness, detection, and treatment of lung cancer and all lung
26disease; and be it further
