4month of May is typically the start of the state’s ozone season; and

5WHEREAS, Ozone and particle pollution are both linked to the
6increased risk of lower birth weight in newborns; and

7WHEREAS, Certain groups are especially vulnerable to the
8effects of air pollution, such as infants, older adults, and people
9with lung diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, and
10scleroderma; and

11WHEREAS, Minorities and lower income groups are often
12disproportionately affected by air pollution, which puts them at
13higher risk for illnesses; and

14WHEREAS, Particulate matter air pollution, especially fine
15particles, can be inhaled deeply into the lungs and cause serious
16damage, including asthma attacks, respiratory illness, lung cancer,
17heart attacks, strokes, and premature death; and

18WHEREAS, According to the American Lung Association’s
192015 State of the Air Report, 14 cities in California top the national
20list of cities most polluted by year-round particle pollution; and

21WHEREAS, Clean Air Month is designed to raise public
22awareness about the need for every Californian to work to reduce
23air pollution; and

24WHEREAS, Clearly there is much still to be done to reduce the
25burden of air pollution and improve the health of tens of millions
26of Californians; and
