Senate Resolution No. 31—Relative to Child Vision Awareness Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Prevent Blindness America indicates that more
2than 12 million children suffer from vision impairment, and that
3eye injuries are one of the leading causes of vision loss in children;
4and

5WHEREAS, Nearly 25 percent of schoolage children have vision
6problems, and, among children three to five years of age, close to
7one in 20 has a problem that could result in permanent vision loss
8if left untreated; and

9WHEREAS, An estimated 2.4 million eye injuries occur
10annually in the United States and nearly 35 percent of these eye
11injuries happen to children 17 years of age and younger; and

12WHEREAS, Prevent Blindness America estimates that in
13California the direct and indirect costs of eye injuries and vision
14loss among children 17 years of age and younger are approximately
15$800,000 each year; now, therefore, be it

16Resolved by the Senate of the State of California,That the Senate
17designates the month of June 2015 as Child Vision Awareness
18Month in California; and be it further

19Resolved, That the Senate recognizes the partnership between
20Prevent Blindness America and the American Academy of
21Ophthalmologists as a highly successful effort to educate families
22about children’s eye health and safety; and be it further

23Resolved, That the State Department of Public Health should
24educate parents about signs that may indicate their child has vision
P2    1problems as well as encourage parents to begin eye examinations
2for their children by three years of age; and be it further

3Resolved, That the State Department of Public Health should
4encourage parents to discuss the importance of eye safety with
5their children, to select age-appropriate toys without sharp or
6protruding parts, and to urge their children to wear protective
7eyewear while participating in sports or recreational activities; and
8be it further

9Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
10this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
