Bill No: SR 32
Author: Morrell (R)
Introduced:5/21/15
Vote: Majority
SUBJECT: National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
SOURCE: Author
DIGEST: This resolution proclaims May 2015 as National Physical
Fitness and Sports Month in California, and encourages all
Californians to enrich their lives through proper diet and
exercise.
ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1)Moderate daily exercise and fitness activities are excellent
ways to relieve stress, lower the risk of heart disease and
diabetes, prevent bone loss, and reduce the risk of some
cancers. Exercise and fitness activities can increase
self-esteem, boost energy, strengthen the heart and muscles,
and burn calories.
2)Fitness activities have been shown to sharpen mental ability
and retard the aging process in all people and, among the
elderly, exercise provides cardiovascular, respiratory,
neuromuscular, metabolic, and mental health benefits.
3)Maximizing one's energy level, increasing muscle mass, and
reducing body fat increases one's chances of living a longer,

healthier life.
4)The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found
that, in 2013, just over 60% of California's population was
either obese or overweight and that 6% of adults are severely
obese - a figure that has quadrupled in the past 30 years.
This resolution proclaims May 2015 as National Physical Fitness
and Sports Month in California, and encourages all Californians
to enrich their lives through proper diet and exercise.
Prior Legislation
ACR 25 (Wildman, 1999) would have designated May 1999 as
California Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and would have
encouraged Californians to assess the physical activity patterns
of young people and provide a range of developmentally
appropriate community sports and recreation programs that are
attractive to young people. The resolution died in the
Assembly.
